I'm traveling with an old toshiba satelitte. It is prone to bouts of massive performance degredation, meaning it often runs slower than ... well... something slow. Anyways, I think I've finally cracked it. It seems that when the BIOS is setup to run the harddrive in "enhanced" mode it actually seems to mean "enhanced suck" mode. Setting it to normal turns what feels like a 15 year old laptop into the 5 year old laptop it really is!
It's also amazing what slow harddrive access speeds will do to trash your whole system performance.
