Was thinking about how much traveling has changed from when my dad was doing it back in the 70s. Back then he pretty much had no communication ability with home, except letters which had probably a 2 week to 1 month trip. I've pretty much been poking my web site in some form or another giving feed back of my "journies" to everyone at home more often than once a day. And I've been messaging people in slow time at a few a day ("roundtrip" maybe average a few hours) on twitter and facebook and having real time communication with people via instant messaging on Google Talk and MSN.
It's neat. I feel less isolated from the world I left behind, and I know some people feel greatly relieved to hear I'm still alive on a daily basis (hi mom!). It's certainly a more well connected world. Everywhere is closer.
Speaking of which, it's quite interesting to me how popular Skype is down here. As long as everyone uses it it's free voice communication from anywhere to anywhere. Family closeness I think is often more important down here than at home, but technologies like Skype allow for families to be more geographically spread out then before while remaining close. It's cool, because I wouldn't be surprised when Skype was developed they didn't quite have this in mind. Previously I'd really only seen it used a bit in businesses that were spread out (like mine) but even then I mostly just used the chat feature, not the voice feature.
Anyways, I think communicative technologies are cool. And I can't wait to see what happens next.
